THE IMPORTANCE OF PREVENTATIVE HEALTH CHECK-UPS
Good health begins with prevention, and that all starts with the individual and establishing good health habits means people may enjoy longer, healthier, and happier lives. Regular check-ups are an important part of a prevention routine and can help keep people on track with their health goals.
The purpose of a health check is to help find, prevent, or lessen the effects of disease. It’s often better to pick up potential problems earlier rather than later. Health checks can provide health care professionals with an opportunity to look at a person's lifestyle, medical history, and family history to find out if they’re at risk for any preventable health conditions.
Health checks can also identify areas where improvements to lifestyle habits can help keep you on the right track. It is recommended by international consensus and understanding that men, above 35 years of age, and women, above 40 years of age, should undergo annual preventive health checkups. In case of a disease in family history, it is prudent to initiate screening tests 10 years before the youngest member of family developed that disease (e.g. diabetes mellitus, coronary heart disease, high cholesterol level, high blood pressure, cancer of the breasts, prostate, colon, etc.).
What are the things you should know before getting a preventative health check-up?
· Several tests are conducted on an empty stomach; 10–15 hours of fasting is required
· Wear loose clothing
· Avoid wearing jewelry or any metallic objects.
· Inform your doctor if there is a pacemaker in the body
Also, discuss with your doctor before your check-up:
1. Your family history
2. Past allergies or surgeries
3. Alcohol, tobacco or illicit drug use
4. Any over-the-counter or herbal medication
5. Vitamins or health supplements
Family History and Health Screenings
Understanding your family history is like having a roadmap to your health. If certain diseases run in your family, it's important to prioritize health screenings as they can detect potential risks early on. Regular screenings tailored to your family's medical history enable proactive management and intervention, significantly improving the chances of preventing or managing hereditary conditions. Early detection allows for timely medical interventions and lifestyle adjustments, paving the way for a healthier and more informed life. Taking charge of your health through screenings ensures you're well-equipped to navigate potential health challenges, providing peace of mind and empowering you to make informed decisions about your well-being.
Sound health not only brings out the best in your day-to-day activities, but you are also happier, allowing yourself to reach personal accomplishments and enjoy the company of your loved ones. Preventive health checkups are a powerful tool which lets us live a longer, healthier, and more contented life.
